The "One Thing at a Time" Strategy

If you are like me, you learned that "multitasking" was the best way to get things done. However, when you enter perimenopause, what you quickly learn is:

When the brain feels scattered, the instinct is often to push harder or multitask more efficiently. During perimenopause, this usually increases overwhelm — and we shut down.

Instead, try the One Thing at a Time strategy:

This simple structure reduces cognitive overload and gives the brain a clearer path forward. Many women find that productivity improves significantly when they stop asking their brain to juggle too many demands simultaneously.

Remember This EAST = LEAST

Everything At the Same Time no longer works the way it used to when you were in your 20s and 30s.

1.     Choose one task and commit to focusing on it for 10–15 minutes without interruption. Set a timer and remove unnecessary distractions — household tasks, work tasks, whatever you choose. The goal is one thing only.

2.     When the timer ends, acknowledge how you handled those minutes: Did you stay on task? Was it easier without distractions? Did you finish sooner than expected?

3.     Decide what happens next: Is it time to move on? Do you need to continue? Do you need assistance to finish what you started?

Let me know how it goes. Did you have more focus? Did you finally get something done that you've been putting off? Maybe it didn't work for you, but it helped with getting your kids to help with something. I would love to know if this helped in any way.
